Mills visits Korle Bu Teaching Hospital

John Evans Atta Mills, visited the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital as part of his retail style campaign that takes the message directly to the masses.

Accompanied by his wife, Mrs. Naadu Mills, they presented items worth over 30 million cedis to the Children’s Block, including bags of rice, bags of sugar, cartoons of soft drinks, toiletries, detergent and toys among others. The head of the Children’s Block, Professor Jennifer Welbeck, received the items and thanked the Flagbearer and his wife for their kind gesture.

Earlier, Professor Mills and his entourage had called on the hospital authorities who showed much appreciation for his visit, considering he has a very tight schedule. The acting head of the hospital, Mr. Christopher Nortey personally thanked Professor and Mrs. Mills, saying “We are grateful that you have chosen to be friends of Korle Bu and we are honoured to have you around today to share what you have with the children who are on admission”

He continued, “I owe what I am today to Prof Mills and I am not surprised that as a politician, the caring man that he was in those days, he still has the ordinary people on his mind” referring to his days as a student of Prof. Mills at the University of Ghana.

The NDC Leader, also thanked Mr. Nortey for making the visit and presentation a successful saying “I would have loved to be coming here more regularly except that these days, when people sight Atta Mills around any hospital, the next thing you will hear is that Atta Mills is nearing his grave”, adding that his visit was to keep faith with the masses, and the children in particular, and to remind them that he cares about their welfare.

He went on further to state that that his government will have Korle-Bu on its agenda. Recounting the refurbishment all the theaters in the surgical block, the building of the cardiothoracic, plastic and burns, and radiotherapy units, and provision of the laparoscopic equipment which were all done by the NDC. He then assured of a sustained and continued support to make Korle Bu the flagship medical center.

Prof Mills also assured the hospital administration that the remuneration of health workers will be high on the agenda of his government, adding “My word will be my word, and health workers will get what they deserve”.

Aside Professor Ofosu Armah, the Chairman of the Hospital Board, those present included Mr. Fred Ohene Kena, Mrs. Ama Benyiwa Doe, Hon Nii Tackie Commey, (MP Odododiodoo), Mr. Samuel Nuamah Donkor, (a former Health Minister), Mrs. Smith (wife of Lt. General Smith), Mr. Fritz Baffour, (NDC Parliamentary Candidate for Ablekuma South) and Victor Smith.
